Somatic Foundations

To me, the field of Somatic’s compliments any Body practice - from Yoga Teacher to massage therapist to osteopath - as it invites a whole new range of possibility and body awareness.

In my opinion, if we want to be the best practitioners we can be, we need to learn to listen not only to the words our clients share with us but to what their body is saying as well.

We all see things through our own biases, so often there is something in the undercurrent of someones experience that is creating the symptomology that they or you are experiencing. When we spend endless hours exploring our body with endless curiosity - from cells, to fluids, to muscles, bones, fascia, nerves, etc - we gain the skill of being able to not only hold space for those around us with a greater breadth, we also begin to feel people more acutely and sense what is going on without taking it on - where there is too much movement and where there is too little movement and guide them from there.

In this training we will discuss the principles of Somatic’s, how to bring it into your life and the work that you do, and most importantly explore it all in your body.

The thing I love the most about Somatic’s is there isn’t a right way and a wrong way or a good and bad. To be advanced in the practice is to navigate the pathway back to curiosity, to sensation, to our innate intelligence, and to be able to hold the content that shows up and ask it what it needs then listen and follow your body’s direction; which, ultimately leads you back to trusting yourself, your instincts, and your intuition.

The invitation inevitably arises to change the way you learn from brain to body, to body to brain. This is the process of Embodiment, when the part of your body you are with becomes the place that is initiating the movement, not because that is what the brain asked of it, but because those cells recognized themselves and filled themselves with consciousness and from that filling a movement was initiated.

Our body is made up of systems and these systems are both a singular system and equally connected to the whole. Somatic’s then becomes about how well can we feel and land into these different body systems, so we can eventually choose which system we want to orient ourselves to and initiate our movements from.

How will we do this?

  • Somatic Education and theory

  • Conversations around core ways of operating

  • Physiology and Anatomy taught Somatically

  • Traditional Chinese Medicine theory (because everything I do is infused with it)

  • Somatic Explorations of the different systems and approaches

  • Yoga - hatha, yin, yoga nidra

  • Free Movement

  • Self touch - proprioception

  • Discussions with Guest Teachers

  • Writing prompts

  • Group discussion
