Lately I find a lot of interest in being specific through alignment and breath techniques and also wide open, where there is an idea or an organ presented and through curiosity and trust one gets to openly navigate what that means to them with no right or wrong way of doing it.
Integrating
Somatics + TCM + Yoga
I began teaching yoga in 2008. It was such a cool time to be a part of yoga. There was a small crew of yoga teachers where I lived, so everyone knew each other or at least of each other, Teacher Trainings didn’t exist in every town and workshops only happened when a studio would fly an international teacher in and all of the teachers would go to the workshop to up-level and bring what we learned into our classes. It was a vibe and I miss those days very much. Alas, here we are.
While I was travelling South America, it came to me that if I really wanted to be a relevant teacher, I would need/want a higher level of education. I applied to the Acupuncture program at our local University and began my studies in Traditional Chinese Medicine in 2010 and graduated in 2014 which turned out to be a remarkable year for me.
As I graduated, I was invited to Guide a few 200 hour Yoga Teacher Trainings and so began my journey of teaching internationally, as well as locally. From there I put together many different programs some focused on yoga, some on the immersion of TCM and yoga, and others on writing. I have taught 200 hour programs in month long intensives to spanning over 6 months, from in-person to online, to a hybrid format.
In 2014, I was also invited from the impeccable Tara Judelle of Embodied Flow to come to Bali to study Embodied Flow. This training opened up my world to a whole other level of relating to my body, it’s systems, and that there was so much more to learn and offer. I have continued to study Somatics ever since. I study Body Mind Centering (BMC) with my beloved teacher Bonnie Bainbridge Cohen, I’ve studied Somatic Stress release with Scott Lyons, and most importantly, I study my insides every day, within every practice, and in my responses. There is so much to learn and it is so exciting.
I have also become a Mother to three daughters and I have not sat in front of a greater teacher than them. I don’t mean this lightly. I have been brought to edges I never knew I had and have accessed reactions and responses from places inside myself that I have never touched or known before. To say they came with an excavation crew is perhaps the greatest metaphor I can come up with. They are my teachers because I’m a student to life and this is my moment for them and for me.
I bring all of this together in every class I teach.
Often the theme and main thread of my class is based on Chinese Medicine theory and how the energy of the body is moving given the season, the social landscape, and the weather. I then layer in Somatics or Yoga or Somatics and Yoga together to let the energy of the body feel itself and decide what to do with whats there, in the moment.
I use a variety of tools from self massage, acupressure, proprioceptive props, yoga nidra, yin yoga, somatic explorations and free movement, dance, yoga asana, to visualizations to take the Chinese Medicine philosophy into the body. Utilizing both/all to serve the wellness and understanding of one’s Self.
We can be here and it doesn’t need to be so confusing.
